Offers come in different units: $28 an hour, 4,500 a month, 60,000 a year. To compare them you need one common unit, and this calculator converts any pay period into all the others. Enter an amount, say what it is per, and see the hourly, daily, weekly, two-week, monthly and yearly figures at once. You set the hours, days and paid weeks of your own work week.
Convert pay in four steps
- Type the pay amount and choose whether it is per hour, day, week, two weeks, month or year.
- Enter your hours per week and days per week. A standard full-time week is 40 hours over 5 days.
- Set the paid weeks per year: 52 for a full year, fewer if you take unpaid leave.
- Read all six periods below. The one you entered is highlighted.
The arithmetic behind it
- Yearly pay is the hourly rate times hours per week times paid weeks, so $25 at 40 hours and 52 weeks is $52,000.
- Monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by twelve, and weekly pay is the yearly figure divided by the paid weeks.
- Daily pay divides the weekly amount by your days per week.
- Going the other way, a yearly salary of $60,000 equals about $28.85 an hour on the same week.
Why hours and weeks change the answer
The same salary is a different hourly rate if you work 35 hours instead of 40, or if two of the 52 weeks are unpaid. A 60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is 28.85 an hour, but over 1,820 hours it is 32.97. Use your contract hours rather than a rule of thumb whenever you compare a salaried job with an hourly one.
What the result does not include
The amounts are before tax and deductions. Overtime, bonuses, commission, employer contributions and paid holidays beyond what you set as paid weeks are not part of the calculation. For a take-home figure, ask your employer or use a net pay tool for your country.
