Record your screen, webcam or voice in a browser tab
A bug that only shows on your machine, a walkthrough for a colleague, a voice memo, a short lesson: a recording says it faster than a page of text. This page records the screen, a single window or tab, the webcam or just the microphone, with no install, no account and no watermark.
The browser makes the recording and the page keeps it in memory. It leaves your device only when you press download.
Recording in six steps
- Choose the source: Screen or window, Webcam or Microphone only.
- Decide on sound. For a screen or webcam recording you can tick Also record my microphone. For a screen recording there is also the sound of the screen or tab.
- Pick the video quality and whether a 3 second countdown runs before the recording starts.
- Press Start. The browser asks what to share or which device to use. Only after you allow it does anything happen.
- Use Pause and Resume as often as you need. The timer, the file size and a level meter show that it works.
- Press Stop recording (or use the browser's own "Stop sharing" button), play the result and press Download recording.
Sound: microphone, tab sound and the mix
When two sound sources are on, for example your microphone and the sound of a tab, the page mixes them into one track. Whether the sound of the screen is available at all depends on the browser and on what you share. Chrome and Edge can share the sound of a tab, and on Windows of the whole system. Firefox and Safari usually record the picture only, and you can still add the microphone. The level meter moves with the loudest source, so you can test a microphone before the real take.
File format, quality and length
- Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM, mostly with VP9 or VP8 video and Opus sound. Safari records MP4. The result panel shows which one you got.
- The quality setting is a target for the video: 1, 2.5 or 6 Mbit/s. A still screen needs far less than a game, so files vary a lot.
- A browser recording carries no length in its header. Most players cope, but some editors show a wrong duration or seek badly; open and re-save it in your editor if that happens.
- Everything is kept in memory until you download, so the tool stops at 1 GB.
- The tool does not convert to MP4 and does not edit. To cut the start and the end, use the video trimmer on this site.
What the browser decides
The browser, not this page, asks for permission and shows a recording indicator in the tab or the system. A recording cannot start silently. Phones and tablets mostly cannot record the screen from a web page, so there you get webcam and microphone. Pictures protected by copy protection, such as some streaming players, are recorded as black. On macOS the browser may need the screen recording permission in the system settings.
Where the recording stays
On your device. The stream goes from your screen or microphone into a recorder inside the page. No request is sent while you record, which you can confirm in the Network panel of your developer tools. The file is saved only through your own download.
