Video Audio Extractor & Muter

Save the sound of a video as a WAV or WebM file, or export a copy of the video without audio. Runs in your browser, with no upload.

Choose or drag in a file – it stays on your device.

Your files and input never leave your browser – nothing is uploaded.

Large files need a lot of memory; everything runs locally in your browser. Recommended: files under ~500 MB, on a desktop. Processing may be slow on phones. Keep this tab open.

Extract audio from video, or strip the sound

Silent copies from this tool are not your video with the sound cut out. Each one is a new file, redrawn frame by frame. The same page can also extract audio from video and save it as WAV or WebM. Use it for a 40-minute meeting recording that a transcription service should get as speech only, for a lecture to hear on a walk, or for a screen capture with a private phone call in the background.

Why one export takes seconds and another takes the whole video length

The WAV button reads the whole file into memory and decodes it in one step, so a file of several gigabytes can fail. A stereo recording at 48 kHz gives about 11.5 MB per minute. The WAV is decoded from the original compressed sound, so it is not better than the source. The WAV writer saves mono or stereo. A file with more than two channels is mixed down to stereo: even channels go to the left side, odd channels to the right. A video without an audio track makes the WAV export fail with an error message.

WebM audio and the silent video work differently. The tool plays the video and records it in real time, so a 20-minute video takes 20 minutes. Browsers slow down background tabs, so keep the tab in front. You may hear the sound while the WebM audio records. The silent video is redrawn on a canvas at 30 frames per second and encoded again, so the frame rate is capped and the file can be larger than the original. The silent video plays muted while it renders. Its output is WebM, or MP4 when the browser records MP4.

Your browser must also be able to decode the video. The tool accepts files that the browser reports as video, such as MP4, WebM and MOV, but it cannot add codecs. An MKV file often has no type at all and is rejected.

Four moves from file to download

  1. Drop a video onto the drop zone or press Select video. The file name and the duration appear next to the player.
  2. Press Save as WAV audio for an uncompressed 16-bit file. Press Save as WebM audio for a smaller, compressed file. For a version without sound, press Export silent video instead.
  3. Wait until the progress bar disappears. The browser then downloads the result as name_audio.wav, name_audio.webm or name_muted.webm. Browsers that record MP4, such as Safari, save name_muted.mp4 and name_audio.m4a instead.
  4. Press Load another video to start with a new file.

The file never leaves the machine

The page makes a local link to the video, and your browser decodes and records it. Pressing a button sends no request. You can check this in the network panel of the developer tools. The result is a normal download. The tool does not use the clipboard.
